In a first day in office, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a fresh chapter” and an bold commencement to his term.

A Groundbreaking Figure

The 34-year-old figure, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Qur'an.

Mamdani now begins one of the most challenging jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households

As his work begins, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only haunts those who fail to “do right by the city.”
